Here is a very simple activity that is very useful to have in your toolbox as a no materials activity.
Aims: Question forms and demonstrative pronouns. Giving personal information/getting to know you.
Skills: Speaking and listening
Materials: A board and board pen.
Level: All but the most early beginners.
Preparation time: None save a little time thinking…
Procedure
1. Write a short list of question prompts on the board. Mine might possibly be:
Mundaka Mercedes October
1992 1492 29th May
Birkenhead
2. Ask the learners to find out why these things are important to you. Model a question. An example might be: “Where you born in Mundaka?”. See variations below.
3. Eventually the learners will oblige you to tell them that Mundaka is my family village in Spain – you answer would therefore be: “that’s the place where my mother’s family come from in Spain”.
Variations
Learners can also write their own prompts.
Do this as pair and or group work.
Concentrate on the distinct between wh- and polar questions.
