Here is a very simple activity that is very useful to have in your toolbox as a no materials activity.
Aims: Fluency in speaking, listening and group negotiation. Giving advise and suggestions.
Skills: Speaking and listening.
Materials: A board and board pen.
Level: Elementary and above.
Preparation time: None,
save a little time thinking…
Procedure
- Introduce the activity to the learners by saying something like: ‘My parents are coming to (country here) for a visit and a holiday. Where could they go?
- Allow the learners to come up with two or three different ideas in their groups. They need to be able to say why and sop making a few notes on reasons might be useful.
- Elicit and board the ideas and reasons.
Variations
- Why not ask a learner to board the reasons?
- In a multilingual class you might want to group the same nationalities together. Curiously, this is the opposite to the received wisdom regarding what we would normally do in multinational classes.
- Extend the activity by:
- choosing the best
- describe the particular place(s) in question
- make a diary or plan of a day or week
- compare places
- role play a travel agent, or tour guide
- you could say that there is a brother and sister who are both going but they both have different interests and will want to go to different places. Where would they go and how would you organize this?
